New research suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
